On the 19th February this year, the 25th anniversary passed of the murder of a father and son in California. Neal Abernathy and his boy, Brendan, were found byhis wife/mother, Susan Abernathy,y when she returned to their home in Hercules.
Thibay-sided city is to the north of San Francisco. On the 19th February 1997, the pair had been dealing with dental appointments. Brendan sat in the chair in the morning and again in the early afternoon. Around 2 pm, they returned home. The next appointment was stuck to the refrigerator door.
The time window for the crime I have seen is between 2.30 pm and5.30 pmm. The home on Dunham Court was at the southern end. There is a turnaround spa,ce and the Abernathys had one of the two detached houses there.
Susan Abernathy was returning home from work at the Chevron refinery. Mr. Abernathy ran an auto tune place not far away and had the day off. Brendan was on a school vacation.
The door was ajar, and the family dog was there to greet her. As she went further inside, she thought for a second that the father and son had just finished play-fighting. Brendan was partly on top of his dad. Both were on the floor. They had been tied and shot in the head.
The cops processed the scene and came up with very little. It looked like it had been a burglary gone wrong. The thing is, very little had been disturbed and even less taken. A necklace that was an heirloom of Susan’s and a telephone answering machine were gone. Other items of value had been ignored.
A friend of the family put together a website dedicated to keeping the crimes ‘green.’The other reason was that Susan Abernathy was not then bothered by endless questions about her son and husband’s deaths.
About five months late,r Susan Abernathy moved back into the house and lived there for many years after that. Some saw this as an indication of indifference. However, she is reported to have visited psychics after that, asking to contact the victims in the hope of finding out who had killed them. The source for this is the family friend and his website.
At about the time she moved into the home, use homeeired a lawyer because she felt the police were not sharing information, and they were endlessly asking her repetitive questions.
Two years later, she married a croommateof Neal’s. The cops indicate they do not see Susan Abernathy as involved in the murders.
There is talk of Neal Abernathy being killed as part of an international software scandal called Inslaw.
Another theory is that young Brendan had issues with other students, dents, and one of them may have got older friends and family to carry out the .attack
For me, the theft of the answer phone is the thing. I take it will have been the latter type. By the late 1990s, how much would one of those have been worth? So the voice of the killer was on it? Had they called ahead, saying they would be round?
