Cari Farver

Cari Farver was a 37-year-old single mother and computer programmer from Macedonia, Iowa, who vanished in November 2012 from Omaha, Nebraska. What was initially thought to be a voluntary disappearance turned out to be a homicide case involving a years-long, digital stalking deception orchestrated by Shanna "Liz" Golyar, a woman who was dating the same man as Farver.

key details of the case

The Disappearance and Deception: Shortly after meeting and dating Dave Kroupa in Omaha in 2012, Farver disappeared. For the next three years, thousands of messages, emails, and social media posts were sent from Farver's accounts to her mother, Kroupa, and others, creating the illusion that she was still alive but had abandoned her life.

The Killer: Shanna "Liz" Golyar, another woman Kroupa was seeing, murdered Farver shortly after they met in November 2012. Golyar used Farver's phone and email to impersonate her, creating a false narrative to cover her tracks.

The Investigation: The case went cold for years until Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office investigators re-examined the digital evidence. They found that Golyar was behind the messages and discovered a photo of Farver's murdered body on a tablet belonging to Golyar.

Conviction: In December 2016, Shanna Golyar was charged with first-degree murder, and she was found guilty in 2017 despite no body ever being recovered. She is currently serving a life sentence in a Nebraska state prison.

Media: The case is featured in the 2024 Netflix documentary "Lover, Stalker, Killer" and the Lifetime movie "The Disappearance of Cari Farver".

Cari Farver's mother, Nancy Raney, continued to search for her daughter for years, with the messages often taunting the family and making them believe Cari was watching them.
