History of the Cottage

Significance: The original Creole cottage on this site was home to Marie Laveau's grandmother, Catherine Henry, and her mother, Marguerite Darcantel.
Marie Laveau grew up there, raised her own children and family between 1839 and 1895, and used the space as a sanctuary to help those in need, including orphans and local vendors.
Current Status: The original structure was demolished in 1903, and a later cottage was constructed on the property around 1905.
Today, the site is a private residence with a commemorative plaque detailing its history, though visitors frequently stop by to leave offerings and pay respects to the Voodoo Queen.
