Toby Dorr

Toby Dorr (formerly Toby Young) is best known for helping convicted murderer John Manard escape from Kansas' Lansing Correctional Facility in 2006.

A former prison volunteer, she smuggled him out in a dog crate.

She served 27 months in prison, later becoming a speaker, author, and founder of the Fierce Grace Movement.

The 2006 Prison Break: In 2004, following a battle with cancer, Dorr started the Safe Harbor Prison Dog Program at the Lansing Correctional Facility.

While managing the program, she developed a romantic relationship with inmate John Manard, who was serving a life sentence for murder.

On February 12, 2006, Dorr smuggled Manard out of the maximum-security prison by hiding him inside a box within a dog crate in the back of her program van.

The pair spent 12 days on the run before authorities cornered and captured them in Tennessee.

Following her arrest, her husband divorced her, and she pleaded guilty to aiding an escape and providing a firearm to a felon.

Life After Prison: Dorr served 27 months and was released from prison in 2008.

After her release, she rebuilt her life, earning two master's degrees and becoming a keynote speaker and advocate for criminal justice reform.

She detailed her experience in her memoir, Living With Conviction, and her story served as the inspiration for the 2022 Lifetime original movie Jailbreak Lovers.
