Worst Prison Systems: Colony 8

Colony 8 is a maximum-security prison in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, that has been featured in documentaries for being one of the country's most notorious correctional facilities. The prison has held over 800 inmates and is particularly known for its section for those serving life sentences.

Key details about Colony 8:

Location: It is in the city of Zhytomyr, west of Kyiv, an area that has not been under Russian occupation.

Security: The facility is described as maximum-security, with a reputation that no one has ever managed to escape. A special multi-level security system controls access to the wing for inmates serving life sentences.

Conditions: The prison was the focus of an episode of the documentary series Behind Bars: The World's Toughest Prisons. It has been featured in other documentaries that highlight the stark conditions inside Ukraine's penitentiary system.

Confusion with Russian prisons

Some online search results mention a "Colony No. 8" in Russia, which is a different facility located in the Tambov region, 300 miles south of Moscow. This Russian facility has been noted for the recruitment of inmates to fight in the war against Ukraine.

The

Ukrainian prison system during the war

Since the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, Ukraine's penitentiary system has faced significant challenges. While Zhytomyr's Colony 8 is not in occupied territory, many other Ukrainian prisoners have been affected by the war.

Some Ukrainian convicts have been offered early release in exchange for military service, echoing Russia's strategy of recruiting prisoners for its war efforts.

Human rights groups report that Russia has illegally detained thousands of Ukrainian civilians and military personnel, holding them in official and unofficial prisons in occupied territories and inside Russia.

These detainees are often held without legal justification, and widespread reports of torture and inhumane conditions have been documented.
